Amazon’s PR Director Vicky Eguia Dies After Battling Cancer

Amazon Studios recently lost a great employee in the form of Vicky Eguia. She was a crucial part of the company’s multiple blockbuster movies including “Manchester by the Sea,” which was the first Amazon movie to get nominated for an Oscar. Vicky Eguia was the PR executive at Amazon Studios and died at the age of 48 in Los Angeles after battling cancer.

Eguia spent many years as the head of publicity at Amazon before she was promoted as the director of PR for Diversity, Community relations, Equity, and Inclusion. The head of Amazon Studios, Jen Stalke, and PR boss, Cory Shields, was sad at the demise of their beloved worker. During a staff memo, they remembered her as a consummate team player who’s always ready to work with dedication and commitment. They further added that her charm and sense of humor will always be missed.

The widely-admired Vicky became part of the company in 2015 and had since had a long professional working relationship with Bob Berney, who was responsible for getting the movie operations off the ground. One of her early successes at Amazon was “Manchester by the Sea,” which earned several Oscar nominations including best picture and best actor awards. This way, Amazon was able to make history by being the first streaming service to be rewarded with a best picture Oscar nomination. Vicky also managed publicity campaigns for the studio for movies such as “One Night in Miami,” “Coming 2 America,” “The Big Sick,” “The Sound of Metal,” and more.

Before coming to Amazon, Eguia held several publicity positions at Millennium Entertainment, Newmarket Films, and Picturehouse. She had worked with a number of Hollywood A-listers including Mel Gibson, Guillermo Del Toro, and Marion Cotillard. She was fortunate enough to work behind some of the blockbusters including The Passion of the Christ, Pan’s Labyrinth, Breakout Monie, and La Vie en Rose.

Ted Hope worked with Berney at Amazon Studios and tweeted some wonderful words in memory of Vicky. He said RIP Vicky Eguia, you had tremendous spirits, which made everyone feel better. He added that her love for movies was evident and she will always be missed.

Vicky began her career as an account executive at Rogers and Cowan in 2000 in the film department. She has worked on campaigns for movies such as My Big Fat Greek Wedding, Whale Rider, and Y Tu Mama Tambien. Vicky at Amazon studios was an executive and also a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

Amazon said that she was a smart, talented, and passionate publicity executive who truly loved what she does, which includes all the phases of the art of making films. They further commended her by saying that she had a great sense of humor and an amazing way of delivering stories, which was entertaining for everyone who knew her. Lastly, they said their dear Vicky was admired by filmmakers, industry, colleagues, and her friends. They concluded by saying that she will always be missed.
